Program overview

Earn a degree in Therapeutic Recreation from one of only three programs of its kind in Canada. This program is designed to help students explore careers while gaining valuable paid work experience through a co-op option. As a recreation therapist, you will work in various settings, addressing emotional, physical, and social needs through leisure and recreation activities. The program emphasizes the development of evidence-based programming and provides hands-on experience, preparing you for a fulfilling career in this rewarding field.

Program structure

The Bachelor of Arts in Therapeutic Recreation is structured to be completed in four years as a full-time student. Students have the option to pursue a co-op program, which extends the duration to five years, allowing for valuable work experience integrated with academic learning. The program includes:

  • A required 105-hour practicum placement
  • A mandatory 560-hour internship
  • Flexibility to choose from 15 electives across various disciplines
  • Opportunities to customize the degree with areas of focus or a double major

Throughout the program, students will alternate between academic study and co-op work terms, typically starting in their second year. This structure ensures that students gain relevant experience while completing their degree.
