Academic Requirements

To apply for the Bachelor of Arts in History program at UPEI, students must meet specific academic requirements. For high school graduates, the following criteria must be fulfilled:

Successful completion of Grade 12 examinations in a University Preparatory Program.
An overall average of at least 70% (or 75% for Quebec Secondary V students) in the following subjects:
- English
- One Social Studies or Language
- Any three other academic courses (Grade 12 Math is recommended).

For international students, specific requirements may apply. It is advisable to contact LOA Portal's advisors for any clarification and support regarding the application process.

Additionally, transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases. Students should also be aware that some first-year Arts courses may require Grade 12 Math as a prerequisite.

For those interested in the Honours program, applicants must submit a letter of application to the Honours Co-ordinator and typically must have a CGPA of 3.0 in all previous university courses. The department expects an average of at least 80% in all previous history courses. Admission decisions are based on demonstrated ability to carry out independent research and sustained historical analysis.

To register as a major in History, students must complete History 1010/1020 and six semester hours (2 courses) at the 2000 level. It is recommended that students take History 2010/2020 in their first or second year. The major program requires successful completion of a minimum of 42 hours of credit in History (14 courses), with specific course requirements outlined.

For a minor in History, students must complete History 1010/1020 and five other history courses (15 semester hours), including specific requirements in Canadian history, continental European history, and other fields.

Language Requirements

The language of instruction at the University of Prince Edward Island is English. All academically admissible applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language prior to undertaking studies. Proficiency may be demonstrated by:
