The University Diploma in Power Engineering at TRU prepares students to become skilled power engineers capable of maintaining and operating essential systems in various settings. This program focuses on the operation of heating and power plants, refrigeration systems, and auxiliary equipment. Graduates will be equipped to work in diverse environments, including commercial facilities like hospitals and schools, as well as industrial sites such as pulp mills and power generation stations. The program emphasizes hands-on experience, ensuring that students gain practical skills necessary for their future careers in power engineering.

Program structure

The Power Engineering program at TRU is designed to provide a comprehensive education over a 34-week period. The program structure includes:

  • Classes held Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
  • Hands-on training in TRU’s steam power training plant, which features two boilers capable of producing over 10,000 lbs of steam per hour.
  • Practical experience in operating the TRU power lab and small demonstration labs.
  • Field tours of various plants in and around Kamloops to help students understand different work environments.

This program also offers the opportunity to earn a 4th Class Power Engineering Certificate, which is essential for those looking to enter the field. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for the Technical Standards and Technical Safety BC exams, ensuring they are well-prepared for certification.
