Program Overview

The Master of Science in Forensic Science (M.Sc.F.S.) at Trent University is the first Canadian program of its kind, designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge in forensic science. This professional course-based program emphasizes the implementation of best practices in the field. Students will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of current topics, methods, and research in forensic science, while also gaining hands-on experience with various techniques used across subdisciplines. The program focuses on developing effective communication skills to present technical scientific analyses to diverse audiences, including scientific, legal, and non-scientific communities.

Program Structure

The M.Sc.F.S. program offers two distinct streams: the Course-Based stream and the Major Research Paper stream. Here are the key details:

  • Program Length: The Course-Based stream spans three semesters, while the Major Research Paper stream allows students to engage in research over a longer period.
  • Credits: Students in the Course-Based stream will complete 9 core courses and 2 electives, while those in the Major Research Paper stream will take 3 half-credit courses each term, along with their research paper courses.
  • Hands-On Experience: In the Course-Based stream, students will complete an independent forensic placement in the third semester, culminating in a final report and symposium presentation.
  • Program Options: Students can choose between the Course-Based stream, which includes a practical placement, or the Major Research Paper stream, which involves conducting original research under faculty supervision.

Featured Experiences

  • Hands-on forensic placement in the Course-Based stream, providing real-world experience.
  • Annual Trent MScFS Experiential Learning Symposium, where students present their work.
  • Opportunity to engage in a Major Research Paper, allowing for in-depth research under faculty guidance.
  • Elective courses tailored to specific areas of interest, such as Bioinformatics and Forensic Psychology.
