Program overview

The Child and Youth Care Counsellor program at Medicine Hat College equips students with essential skills and competencies to support the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social development of vulnerable children, youth, and families. This program is particularly focused on those who have experienced abuse, neglect, or family breakdown. Students will learn to develop healthy, caring relationships and understand the dynamics of abuse and neglect. The curriculum includes courses on professionalism, psychology, treatment methods, and counselling skills, all aimed at enhancing personal development and growth. Graduates will be prepared to make a significant impact in the lives of those they serve.

Program structure

The Child and Youth Care Counsellor program is designed to be completed in two years. The program structure includes:

  • Three practicum placements throughout the program, allowing students to apply their skills in real-world settings.
  • Courses that cover essential topics such as group process, family dynamics, and ethics.
  • Active participation in group projects, role plays, and counselling sessions to enhance learning.
  • Integration of theory and practice through community engagement in three of the four semesters.

Students will also have the opportunity to use their diploma as credit towards a degree at various partner institutions. The program is a member of the Alberta Child & Youth Care Educator’s Consortium, ensuring that the curriculum is recognized across institutions.
