Academic Requirements

To apply for the Bachelor of Education / University Transfer: Education program at Medicine Hat College, students must meet specific academic requirements. Here are the details:

High School Requirements:

Alberta High School Courses or equivalents with a minimum 60% average in the required courses.
ELA 30-1 (minimum 60%).
Three 30-level academic subjects.
One 30-level 5-credit, or two 3-credit subjects at the 30-level (Special Projects 30 excluded).

Mature Student (21 years of age):

ELA 30-1 (minimum 60%).
Pre-requisite courses required, e.g., Chemistry 30 required for university level Chemistry.

It is strongly suggested that students entering Education possess Math 30-1 or Math 30-2, although it is not required for admission.

Continuation Requirements for Third Year:

Successful completion of 20 courses/60 credits of approved university transfer coursework (a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0).
A minimum B (3.0) in EDTS 232 and EDTS 234.
A minimum C- (1.7) in ENGL 252 and ENGL 202 or 203.

Students should be aware that under the Protection for Persons in Care Act (January 1998), they will be required to provide a current Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Search as well as an Alberta Children’s Services Intervention Record Check to the school jurisdiction in which they are placed for each teaching practicum or experience. Student teachers are responsible for the cost of obtaining this documentation, ensuring it is provided to school jurisdictions requiring it, and providing a copy to the Education Student Placement Officer prior to the start of the first field experience.

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

- Score of 90 with a minimum score of “3 plus” on the speaking test for Advanced English Language Proficiency
PTE (Pearson Test of English):
- 54 for General English Language Proficiency
- 64 but students must also complete another exam with a spoken language requirement for Advanced English Language Proficiency
CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment):
- Score of 7 in each band for General English Language Proficiency
- Score of 8 when completed with a LINC program for Advanced English Language Proficiency
