Program overview

The thesis-based Master of Science in Kinesiology at Lakehead University offers a multidisciplinary approach to studying human performance from a scientific perspective. This program emphasizes eight key content areas, including adapted physical activity, biomechanics, sports medicine and rehabilitation, exercise physiology, motor control and learning, psychology of physical activity, sociocultural aspects, and health promotion. Students have the flexibility to select courses that align with their interests and can also take electives outside the Kinesiology program. This comprehensive curriculum prepares graduates for advanced roles in the field of Kinesiology.

Program structure

The Master of Science in Kinesiology program is designed to be completed within two years of continuous registration, requiring students to fulfill all requirements within six terms. The program structure includes:

  • Completion of four and a half Full Course Equivalents (FCE) for graduation.
  • A required thesis (Kinesiology 5901) equivalent to two and a half FCE courses.
  • Two mandatory half-courses: Kinesiology 5010 (Research Methods and Design) and Kinesiology 5011 (Statistical Analysis in Kinesiology).
  • Selection of one FCE elective from a variety of specialized half-courses.

Students also have the option to specialize in Gerontology through an interdisciplinary approach, collaborating with multiple departments to enhance their learning experience.
