Program overview

The Master of Arts in Economics at Lakehead University offers a comprehensive training in core economic theory along with various field options. This program is designed for students who prefer a non-thesis route, which is common in many North American graduate economics programs. Students will engage in a combination of coursework and an extended research paper, allowing them to deepen their understanding of economic principles and applications.

Program structure

The Master of Arts in Economics program is structured to provide a robust educational experience over a defined period. The program length is two years for the non-thesis option, which includes:

  • Eight half courses
  • An extended research paper

Students typically complete six courses in their first year (three in the fall and three in the winter) and two courses in the fall of their second year, followed by the completion of their extended paper in the winter of the second year.

For those opting for the co-operative program, the structure includes:

  • Two four-month work terms following the first two terms of study
  • An additional duration of two terms to accommodate the work terms, extending the total program length to eight terms

Students must complete at least six half courses to qualify for the co-op option, and placements are facilitated by the Career and Co-operative Education Services in consultation with the Department.
