College Diploma - Early Childhood Education (ECED)

Academic Requirements

The Early Childhood Education (ECE) program at Georgian College has specific academic requirements for admission. Here are the key points:

• Applicants must possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or an equivalent qualification, or they may qualify through mature student status.
• A minimum of Grade 12 English (C or U) is required.
• Mature students, non-secondary school applicants (19 years or older), and home school applicants may also be considered for admission. Eligibility can be met through equivalent courses, upgrading, completion of the GED, or equivalency testing.
• Applicants who have taken courses from a recognized and accredited post-secondary institution and/or have relevant life or learning experience may also be considered for admission.
• A Criminal Reference/Vulnerable Sector Check is required prior to placement. Students should obtain this check three months before their placement, as earlier checks may not be considered current.
• Students may need to provide proof of completion of Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification, along with an up-to-date immunization record, including a two-step TB test, in some cases.
• Proof of completion of the Ontario Ministry of Labour Health and Safety Awareness training must also be provided before proceeding on field placement.
• It is strongly recommended that students have volunteer or past work experience in a licensed childcare setting to prepare for their academic work in the ECE program.

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Language Requirements

The language of instruction at Georgian College is English. All applicants for whom English is not their first language must provide proof of language proficiency. For the College Diploma - Early Childhood Education (ECED) program, applicants must meet ONE of the following criteria:

• Must have completed three full years of study at the secondary school (high school) level in English in a country where English is a primary language.
• Must have completed one full year of study in an accredited postsecondary program in English in a country where English is a primary language.
• Must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or Canadian provincial equivalent) and English credit (Grade 12 U, M or C) issued by a public or Catholic school board.
• Provide proof of graduation from one of the authorized Georgian College partner school pathway programs.
• Must have completed two years of study at a secondary private school in Ontario and received an Ontario Secondary School Diploma and English credit (Grade 12 U, M or C).

Acceptable language tests include, but are not limited to:

• Duolingo Language Test: 110
• TOEFL internet-based test (IBT): 79
• TOEFL paper-based test: 550
• IELTS Academic only: 6.0
• YELT: 1-5
• TOEIC (Public Test): 800
• Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL): 60
• Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE): 58
• Cambridge English: C1 Advanced (CAE): 170
