Academic Requirements

To apply for the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Public Health) program at Cape Breton University, students must meet specific Academic Requirements. Here are the key points to consider:

General Requirements for High School Graduates:

- 2 Science 12 level academic or advanced courses (chemistry is required)

Transfer Students:

To transfer to CBU, students must be in good academic standing at their current or previous institution and meet the general admissions requirements for the program.

Transcripts: Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Note: The program has specific deadlines for applications. For Canadian students, the deadline for Winter 2025 is December 15, 2024. For international students, the deadlines are April 15, 2025, for Fall 2025 and April 15, 2026, for Fall 2026.

Language Requirements

The majority of programs at Cape Breton University are taught in English. Therefore, students need to demonstrate strong English communication, listening, comprehension, reading, and writing skills to succeed in their studies.

If your first language is not English, you will need to provide documentation to show that CBU’s English language proficiency requirements have been met. Below are the accepted English language tests and their respective requirements:

TOEFL iBT (and iBT Home Edition): minimum overall score of 80 with no score below 20.
IELTS Academic (and IELTS Indicator): minimum overall score of 6.5 with no band below 6.0.
CAEL: minimum score of 60.
MELAB: minimum score of 85.
Pearson PTE (Academic): minimum overall score of 59 with no score below 50.
CanTEST: minimum score of 4.5 (reading & listening) and 4.0 (writing).
Duolingo English Test: minimum score of 120 with no score below 105 for undergraduate programs, diplomas, and certificates. Minimum score of 125 with no score below 110 for Master of Business Administration, Bachelor of Education, and Post-baccalaureate diplomas.

Official test scores should be included with your application or sent directly to Cape Breton University from the testing language body.

If you have completed at least two years in a secondary school or have completed at least 30 credit hours at a post-secondary institution where English is the primary language of instruction, you may be exempt from submitting a language score. However, official documentation will be required to confirm this.

In all cases, Cape Breton University reserves the right to require proof of language proficiency before granting permission to register in academic courses.
