Program Overview

The Bachelor of Arts Community Studies program at Cape Breton University is designed to empower students to engage with their communities and address real-world issues. 3-Year Program
4-Year Program

Academic Requirements

For students interested in the Bachelor of Arts Community Studies program at Cape Breton University, the following Academic Requirements must be met:

General Requirements for High School Graduates:
- Completion of English 12 (academic or advanced)
- Four additional grade 12 academic or advanced level courses
International Students:
- Bằng Tốt Nghiệp Trung Học Phổ Thông (Secondary School Graduation Certificate)
Transfer Students:
- Must be in good academic standing at your current or previous institution.
- Must meet the general admissions requirements for the program.

Important deadlines for international students are as follows:

Fall 2025: April 15, 2025
Fall 2026: April 15, 2026

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Language Requirements

The majority of programs at Cape Breton University are taught in English. Students need strong English communication, listening, comprehension, reading, and writing skills to be successful.

Cape Breton University has established relationships with several English language partners. If your first language is not English, you will need to provide documentation to show that CBU’s English language proficiency requirements have been met. Below are the accepted English language tests and their respective requirements:

TOEFL iBT (and iBT Home Edition): minimum overall score of 80 with no score below 20.
IELTS Academic (and IELTS Indicator): minimum overall score of 6.5 with no band below 6.0.
CAEL: minimum score of 60.
MELAB: minimum score of 85.
Pearson PTE (Academic): minimum overall score of 59 with no score below 50.
CanTEST: minimum score of 4.5 (reading & listening) and 4.0 (writing).
Duolingo English Test: minimum score of 120 with no score below 105 for undergraduate programs, diplomas, and certificates. Minimum score of 125 with no score below 110 for Master of Business Administration, Bachelor of Education, and Post-baccalaureate diplomas.

Official test scores should be included with your application or sent directly from the testing language body to Cape Breton University.

If you have completed at least two years in a secondary school or have completed at least 30 credit hours at a post-secondary institution where English is the primary language of instruction, you are not required to submit a language score. Official documentation will be required to confirm this period of study was in English.

Please note: If you meet the English Proficiency Exemption and submit a language score that falls below the minimum score requirements, your application will be deemed inadmissible.
