Academic Requirements

To apply for the Bachelor of Arts - Sociology - Global Studies and Empire program at Bishop's University, prospective students should be aware of the following Academic Requirements:

• Applicants must have completed 12 years of formal schooling and received a secondary school credential that would permit access to university in their country.
• Minimum average required varies depending upon the curriculum followed; transcripts are reviewed on an individual basis. Contact the Admissions Office for detailed information on your particular situation.
• For international students, transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.
• Specific course requirements for the program include:
  • Grade 11 level Mathematics for the Williams School of Business.
  • No specific course requirements for Humanities.
  • No specific course requirements for Social Sciences.
  • For Natural Sciences & Mathematics:
    • University-entrance Mathematics, two university-entrance Sciences (usually Biology, Chemistry, and/or Physics) for B.Sc. Science programs.
    • University-entrance Mathematics for B.A. Science programs.
  • For the School of Education (math or science as a teachable):
    • University-entrance Mathematics, two university-entrance Sciences (usually Biology, Chemistry, or Physics).

It is important to note that meeting the minimum posted requirements does not guarantee admission, as Bishop’s University receives more applications than available spaces. Therefore, it is advisable to apply as soon as possible.

Language Requirements

All applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency regardless of citizenship/immigration status in Canada. Please identify the entry below that best describes your situation in order to determine what, if any, additional supporting documentation you must provide with your application for admission:

Completed / completing a DEC at an English or French CEGEP in Quebec

• Document required: Quebec permanent code

Completed / completing at least three years of instruction at an accredited secondary institution, recognized by Bishop’s University, where English or French is the primary language of instruction

• Document required: High school transcript from the institution where English or French is the primary language of instruction

Completed/completing at least 30 credit hours (or equivalent to one full year of study) at a post‐secondary institution, recognized by Bishop’s University, where English or French is the primary language of instruction

• Document required: Transcript of studies from the post-secondary institution where English or French is the primary language of instruction

Completed a recognized English assessment with appropriate minimum score:

• TOEFL minimum overall score of 90 (internet-based) with no component score below 20
• IELTS academic test, minimum overall score of 6.5 with no component score below 6.0.
• Cambridge English, minimum overall score of 176 on one of the following:
  • B2 First
  • C1 Advanced
  • C2 Proficient
• PTE – Pearson Test of English (Academic)
  • Overall Score of 65 with no sub-score under 60
• Duolingo English Test (DET) minimum score of 115 with no sub-score under 90
• LanguageCert Academic Test: minimum band score of 70-74 with no individual score less than 65

Document Required: Official English assessment test score report sent to Bishop’s University directly from the testing organization.

*Please note that Cambridge English test scores are considered “valid” for a period of no more than four years from the date the test score was achieved.
