learn the differences between admission, a Letter of Acceptance (LOA), and a Canadian study permit, including application requirement and the steps to prepare your study permit application.

Being accepted by a Canadian institution does not automatically mean you are authorized to study in Canada. The school reviews your admission application and issues a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) if you are accepted. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) then assesses your study permit application based on the applicable requirements. So, what is the difference between admission, an LOA, and a study permit? Once you receive your LOA, what else do you need to prepare before applying for a study permit?
What Is the Difference Between Admission, an LOA, and a Canadian Study Permit?
When you apply to a study program in Canada, you must submit an admission application for the school to assess whether you meet the program’s requirements, such as academic qualifications, English language proficiency, and other relevant criteria. If your application is successful, you will receive a Letter of Acceptance (LOA), an official document confirming that you have been accepted into a specific study program at the institution. The admission and LOA process can be summarized in four steps:

Canada admission and loa process

Meanwhile, a study permit is issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It authorizes you to study in Canada, subject to the conditions specified in the permit. The table below summarizes the key differences between an LOA and a study permit.

Comparison of a Canadian Letter of Acceptance (LOA) and study permit

In short: The school decides whether to admit you to a study program and issues an LOA if you are accepted. IRCC separately assesses your study permit application and decides whether to approve it.
Does Receiving an LOA Guarantee That Your Study Permit Will Be Approved?
The answer is no. An LOA confirms that you have been accepted into a study program at a Canadian institution, but it does not guarantee that your study permit application will be approved.IRCC assesses each application based on the applicable requirements and the applicant’s individual circumstances. Therefore, after receiving your LOA, you must still prepare and submit a separate study permit application and meet the relevant eligibility requirements. What Does IRCC Assess When You Apply for a Study Permit? An LOA is an important document in your study permit application, but it is not the only one. Depending on your study program, where you apply from, and your individual circumstances, you may need to prepare the following documents:

LOA and information about your school and study program: You need a valid Letter of Acceptance from the designated learning institution (DLI) you plan to attend.

Provincial Attestation Letter or Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL): This is required for most study permit applications, although certain applicants may qualify for an exemption under current regulations.

Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ): If you plan to study in Quebec, check whether you need a CAQ and how to meet the applicable provincial attestation requirements.

Proof of financial support: You must demonstrate that you can cover your tuition fees, living expenses, and transportation costs. If your program lasts longer than one year, you must also explain how you plan to finance your studies for the full duration of the program.

Additional supporting documents: Depending on your circumstances, you may need to provide personal documents, a letter of explanation, medical examination results, or a police certificate if required.

This is a general overview, not a mandatory checklist for every applicant. Before applying, consult IRCC’s current instructions and document checklist to determine exactly which documents you need to submit.
What Should You Do After Receiving an LOA to Apply for a Study Permit?
Once you have been accepted by a Canadian institution, you can follow these steps to prepare your study permit application.1. Choose a School and Study ProgramResearch programs that align with your academic and career goals. Before applying, check the admission requirements, language proficiency requirements, and information about the insitution.2. Submit Your Admission ApplicationPrepare the required documents and submit your admission application to the school. The institution will assess your application and decide whether to accept you into the program.3. Receive and Review Your LOAIf you are accepted, the school will issue your LOA. Once you receive it, check key details such as your full name, study program, start date, program duration, and any conditions attached to your acceptance. If you find any errors, contact the school for guidance on how to have them corrected.4. Identify the Requirements for Your Study Permit ApplicationAfter receiving your LOA, check which documents you need to prepare for your study permit application. These may include a PAL/TAL or a CAQ, if applicable, along with proof of financial support and personal documents.5. Submit Your Study Permit ApplicationComplete your application according to IRCC’s instructions and submit it through the process applicable to your circumstances. After submission, monitor your application status and respond to any requests for additional information or documents.
In Summary
Admission is the process through which a school assesses your application and decides whether to accept you into a study program.A study permit, on the other hand, is a document issued by IRCC that authorizes you to study in Canada, subject to the conditions specified in the permit.Receiving an LOA does not mean your study permit has been approved. After being accepted by a Canadian institution, you must still prepare a separate study permit application and meet IRCC’s requirements in effect at the time you apply. Read more:

Study in Canada 2026: New Policies, PAL/TAL, and Study Permits

Decoding Study Abroad Terms: SOP, CLOA, LOE, LOA & LOI Explained
